About Manus
Manus is a general-purpose autonomous AI agent built by Butterfly Effect (also known for Monica.im), a Singapore-headquartered company founded in China. Launched in March 2025, it went viral for a different interaction model than a chatbot: instead of answering one prompt, it takes a high-level goal and independently plans and executes a multi-step sequence of actions to produce a finished deliverable (a report, a spreadsheet, a slide deck, or a working web app) rather than just a text response.
Architecturally, Manus runs a central executor agent that breaks a goal into a plan and dispatches specialized sub-agents and tools to carry it out: a browser agent for web research and interaction, a code agent for scripts and small apps, and a file agent for document generation. This orchestration of specialists lets it complete multi-step, cross-domain tasks (research a topic, analyze the data, and produce a report) in one delegated run rather than needing to be walked through each step.
Manus is cloud-only and sold on credit-based plans, from a free tier with daily credits to Standard, Customizable, and Extended plans and per-seat Team and Enterprise plans. Its ownership was contested: Meta agreed to acquire the company for about $2 billion in December 2025, but Chinese regulators ordered the deal unwound in April 2026, and Manus resumed independent operations under its founding team in September 2026.
