Meta Muse
FreemiumYour personal AI agent that gets things done for you.

Scores
Popularity4/5
About 2.8 million downloads in its first two weeks and the top free app in the US and Canada, ahead of ChatGPT, with mainstream coverage from CNBC and Bloomberg. Most developers have heard of it, but it is a consumer product rather than something they build with.
Learning Curve1/5
Users talk to it like a person in an app or a WhatsApp chat, and the agent's VM, browser, and credentials store are provisioned automatically with nothing to install or configure.
Flexibility2/5
Connectors, user-supplied API keys, and a browser fallback reach most consumer services, but the model, runtime, and permission system are fixed by Meta and there is no way to extend the agent with custom code.
Performance4/5
Runs on Muse Spark with a full browser and code runtime per user, and handles multi-step errands such as bookings and purchases end to end, though early reviews still report tasks that stall or need a retry.
Portability1/5
Tasks, memory, and connected accounts live in a Meta-hosted VM, tied to Meta's own models and available in two countries, with no export or self-hosted path.
About Meta Muse
Muse is Meta's personal AI agent, launched on September 8, 2026 in the US and extended to Canada ten days later, for adults 18 and over. Instead of answering one message at a time like a chatbot, it takes a goal, builds a plan, and works through it by itself: researching on the web, filling in forms, handling customer-service chats, booking appointments and travel, and shopping across connected apps and sites. It asks for approval before sensitive actions such as sending email or making a purchase.
Each user gets a Muse Secure VM, an isolated cloud Linux machine that holds the agent, a full browser, a code runtime, and that user's files. Muse reaches outside services in three ways: built-in connectors that are enabled one service at a time, API credentials the user supplies, and the VM's browser when a service has no API. Passwords sit in a separate credentials store so the model never sees them, and a host-side component called Sentinel is the only thing allowed to grant connector actions and network egress, which is Meta's defence against prompt-injected approvals. Memory is persistent and user-editable, and tasks can run on a schedule or in response to events.
Muse is used through the Muse app on iOS, Android, and Mac, on the web at muse.ai, or by messaging it directly in WhatsApp, which offers a reduced feature set. The Mac app can also work with local files and native apps such as Messages, Calendar, and Notes when given permission. It runs on Meta's Muse Spark model family, and usage is metered in weekly Muse tokens, with a free allowance and two paid plans.
It is the fully managed, zero-setup end of the personal-agent genre, the same side as Manus, opposite self-hosted agents such as OpenClaw and Hermes Agent that users run on their own hardware with their own model keys. Muse is closed-source, there is no self-hosted or bring-your-own-model option, and privacy questions have followed it since launch, including a widely reported case of the agent referring to on-device messages the reporter said it had not been granted.
Key Features
- Goal-driven agent that plans and completes multi-step tasks on its own
- Dedicated Muse Secure VM per user with a browser, code runtime, and file storage
- Opt-in connectors, user-supplied API keys, or browser automation to reach services
- Sentinel permission layer that alone approves connector actions and network access
- Scheduled and event-triggered background tasks with editable long-term memory
- Available in iOS, Android, and Mac apps, on muse.ai, and inside WhatsApp
- Mac app access to local files, Messages, Calendar, and Notes with permission
Pros
- No setup at all: no server, API key, or model choice, unlike self-hosted agents such as OpenClaw
- Generous free allowance of 100 million Muse tokens a week before any payment
- Approval flow runs outside the conversation, so injected text cannot fake a user's consent
- Reachable from WhatsApp, which puts a capable agent in an app billions already use
Cons
- Only available in the US and Canada, with no announced date for the UK, EU, or India
- Closed-source and locked to Meta's Muse Spark models, with no self-hosting option
- Early privacy incidents, including reported access to on-device messages without permission
- Built for personal errands rather than developer workflows, with no public API for building on it
