Scores
Popularity4/5
64K+ GitHub stars make it a genuine, well-established peer to Open WebUI and LibreChat, though smaller than Open WebUI's community by a wide margin.
Learning Curve4/5
A native desktop app for Mac/Windows/Linux gets a solo user running in minutes with zero Docker or terminal knowledge required; the self-hosted Docker path for teams takes more setup, especially configuring per-workspace vector DBs.
Flexibility5/5
Per-workspace document/vector-DB/retrieval configuration, 25+ LLM providers, and 7 vector database backends make it the most configurable RAG-first chat UI in its category.
Performance3/5
Suitable for solo and small-team RAG workloads, but multi-user administration and scaling are less proven at organizational scale than Open WebUI's more mature RBAC.
Portability5/5
MIT licensed with no branding requirements or user thresholds, genuinely self-hostable via Docker or desktop app, and portable across LLM providers and vector databases.
About AnythingLLM
AnythingLLM is a private AI workspace from Mintplex Labs that was designed around retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) from the start, rather than adding document chat to a chat UI later. Its organizing unit is the workspace: each one gets its own ingested documents, vector database settings, and retrieval parameters, so a team can keep several isolated knowledge bases (one per project or client, say) in a single deployment without documents bleeding across them.
Backend choice is broad. It supports 25+ LLM providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama, LocalAI, DeepSeek, Mistral, and Groq, and several vector databases: LanceDB by default, or Pinecone, Qdrant, Weaviate, Chroma, PGVector, and Astra DB. Beyond chat, a built-in agent framework handles web browsing and tool use, with a no-code agent builder, MCP compatibility, and automatic and user-managed memory.
AnythingLLM runs three ways: as a free desktop app for Mac, Windows, and Linux that needs no Docker or terminal, as a self-hosted Docker deployment for multi-user teams (with one-click templates for AWS, GCP, DigitalOcean, Render, and Railway), or as a hosted cloud instance managed by Mintplex Labs. The open-source edition is MIT licensed with no feature gating.
Key Features
- Per-workspace documents, vector DB settings, and retrieval parameters
- 25+ LLM providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama, LocalAI, DeepSeek, Mistral, Groq, and more)
- Vector databases: LanceDB (default), Pinecone, Qdrant, Weaviate, Chroma, PGVector, Astra DB
- Built-in agent framework with web browsing, no-code agent builder, and MCP compatibility
- Native desktop apps for Mac, Windows, and Linux, with no Docker required
- Automatic and user-managed memory
- MIT licensed and free to self-host with no feature gating
Pros
- RAG-first design with real per-workspace isolation, where many chat UIs treat document Q&A as an add-on
- Desktop app is the easiest way in the self-hosted chat UI field to start without Docker or a terminal
- MIT licensed with no feature gating, branding requirement, or user-count threshold, unlike Open WebUI
- Widest vector database choice among self-hosted chat UIs, plus 25+ LLM providers
- Agent framework and MCP support go beyond chat into task automation
Cons
- Multi-user RBAC and team administration are less mature than Open WebUI's
- Smaller community and fewer third-party plugins than Open WebUI
- Many backend options add configuration surface for someone who just wants a simple default
- Hosted cloud pricing is not published
