About

Windsurf is an AI-native IDE built by Codeium on top of VS Code's open-source core, released in late 2024. Its defining feature is Cascade — an autonomous agent that can understand an entire codebase, plan multi-step changes, edit files across directories, run terminal commands, and debug errors in a single conversational loop. Unlike copilot-style tools that respond to individual prompts, Cascade maintains awareness of the broader task context between steps.

Windsurf inherits VS Code's extension compatibility, keybindings, and settings, making it a low-friction switch for existing VS Code users. Codeium's autocomplete engine handles inline completions, and a chat interface handles questions, refactoring requests, and code generation for smaller tasks. The underlying AI model is selectable — Claude, GPT-4o, and Codeium's own models are available.

At launch, Windsurf's AI features were free with no usage limits — a direct competitive move against Cursor's subscription model. Available on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Codeium is a private company backed by Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst.
