About Kiro
Launched at AWS Summit New York in July 2025, Kiro is an agentic IDE based on Code OSS (the open-source core of Visual Studio Code). Its defining feature is Spec Mode: developers describe a feature in natural language, and Kiro auto-generates user stories with acceptance criteria, a technical design document, and a prioritised task list before writing a single line of code. A complementary Vibe Mode offers a faster, more conversational coding experience. Kiro autonomously investigates and modifies codebases, presenting every change in a diff window for developer review. It integrates with AWS Bedrock and Amazon Q, supports a wide range of languages, and maintains full VS Code extension compatibility. Amazon has adopted Kiro as its internal standard AI development environment, reporting dramatic productivity improvements on large projects.
Pricing is credit-based: the Free tier includes a small monthly credit allowance with access to open weight models (Qwen3 Coder Next, DeepSeek 3.2, MiniMax) and Claude Sonnet 4.5.
