About

Launched at AWS Summit New York in July 2025, Kiro is an agentic IDE based on Code OSS (the open-source core of Visual Studio Code). Its defining feature is Spec Mode: developers describe a feature in natural language, and Kiro auto-generates user stories with acceptance criteria, a technical design document, and a prioritised task list before writing a single line of code. A complementary Vibe Mode offers a faster, more conversational coding experience. Kiro autonomously investigates and modifies codebases, presenting every change in a diff window for developer review. It integrates with AWS Bedrock and Amazon Q, supports a wide range of languages, and maintains full VS Code extension compatibility. Amazon has adopted Kiro as its internal standard AI development environment, reporting dramatic productivity improvements on large projects.

Key Features

  • Spec Mode: auto-generates user stories, architecture docs, and task lists from natural language
  • Vibe Mode: conversational agentic coding for fast iteration
  • Autonomous multi-file code changes with diff review window
  • Agent Hooks for automating triggered workflows
  • AWS Bedrock and Amazon Q integration
  • VS Code extension and settings compatibility
  • CLI support alongside the IDE
  • Supports 20+ programming languages including Python, TypeScript, Go, Rust, Java

Pros

  • Spec-driven workflow reduces vague prompt-to-code guesswork
  • Full diff window — every autonomous change is reviewable before acceptance
  • Adopted internally by Amazon with proven productivity gains
  • VS Code compatible — existing extensions and settings carry over
  • CLI available in addition to the desktop IDE

Cons

  • Credit consumption bug caused users to burn through limits faster than expected
  • Pricing criticised as opaque — one request can silently consume 4–6 credits
  • More expensive than competitors like Windsurf at equivalent usage levels
  • Free tier limited to 50 credits — insufficient for meaningful daily use
  • Requires internet connection; no offline capability
