About

Claude is Anthropic's family of large language models, designed to be helpful, harmless, and honest. Built on Constitutional AI training principles, Claude models are competitive at the frontier of reasoning, coding, analysis, and long-form writing while placing explicit emphasis on safety and reduced hallucination rates.

Model families

Claude is organized into three performance tiers, each available in multiple generations:

Claude Haiku is the fastest and most cost-efficient tier, optimized for high-throughput tasks such as classification, extraction, summarization, and customer-facing assistants where latency and cost matter most. Claude 3 Haiku and Claude 3.5 Haiku are the primary Haiku variants; context window of 200K tokens.

Claude Sonnet is the balanced tier — strong reasoning and coding performance at a moderate price point. Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Claude 3.7 Sonnet are widely used for agentic workflows, code generation, and complex document analysis. Claude 3.7 Sonnet introduced extended thinking (hybrid reasoning mode) and the industry's first broadly available computer use capability, allowing Claude to control a desktop browser or GUI autonomously. Context window of 200K tokens.

Claude Opus is the most capable tier, designed for tasks that demand deep reasoning, nuanced understanding, and high-stakes accuracy. Claude 3 Opus was Anthropic's most powerful general model through most of 2024; Claude 4 Opus (2025) is positioned as a frontier reasoning and coding model suited for complex multi-step agentic tasks. Context window of 200K tokens.

Claude 4 family (2025): Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 4 and Claude Opus 4 in 2025. Sonnet 4 delivers strong reasoning and agentic performance at moderate cost. Opus 4 is Anthropic's frontier model — excelling at sustained reasoning across multi-turn agentic tasks and complex coding benchmarks. Both Claude 4 models support extended thinking and computer use.

Access methods

Anthropic API (direct): REST API and official SDKs for Python and TypeScript/JavaScript. Billed per token (input + output). Supports streaming, tool use (function calling), vision, extended thinking, document processing, and the Files API for persistent document uploads.

Amazon Bedrock: Claude models are available as managed endpoints on AWS Bedrock — no Anthropic account needed. Billed through AWS. Supports cross-region inference, provisioned throughput, and Bedrock Agents integration. Suitable for teams already on AWS infrastructure.

Google Cloud Vertex AI: Claude models are available as Vertex AI endpoints. Billed through Google Cloud. Integrates with Vertex AI pipelines, Vertex AI Agent Builder, and GCP IAM — ideal for teams on GCP.

Third-party providers: Claude is also accessible via OpenRouter, AWS Marketplace, Azure Marketplace (limited models), and various API aggregators that expose it alongside other providers.

Key Features

  • Three-tier model lineup: Haiku (fast/cheap), Sonnet (balanced), Opus (frontier) — each tuned for different cost/quality trade-offs
  • 200K token context window across all current models — handles full codebases or long documents in one call
  • Extended thinking mode: configurable step-by-step reasoning before responding (Sonnet 3.7+, Claude 4)
  • Computer use: Claude can control a desktop browser or GUI via screenshot-and-action loops
  • Tool use / function calling with parallel multi-tool support and structured JSON responses
  • Multimodal input: images, PDFs, and documents processed natively alongside text
  • Prompt caching: cache system prompts or large context blocks to cut costs by up to 90%
  • Multi-cloud access: Anthropic API, Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, plus OpenRouter and other aggregators
  • Batch API for 50%-cheaper asynchronous processing of high-volume offline workloads
  • Safety-focused Constitutional AI training with strong performance on honesty and reduced hallucination

Pros

  • Best-in-class long-context handling — 200K tokens makes full-repo or full-document reasoning practical
  • Extended thinking gives explicit reasoning trace that improves accuracy on hard multi-step problems
  • Computer use capability opens browser/GUI automation without custom RPA tooling
  • Prompt caching dramatically reduces costs for repeated system-prompt-heavy applications
  • Available on Bedrock and Vertex AI — fits naturally into existing AWS or GCP infrastructure without a separate Anthropic account
  • Tiered model lineup lets you match cost to task without switching providers
  • Constitutional AI approach produces more consistent instruction-following and reduced harmful outputs

Cons

  • No image generation or audio modalities — text and vision input only
  • No fine-tuning support via the Anthropic API (unlike OpenAI or Google Gemini)
  • Higher output token prices at the Opus tier compared to some competitors
  • Computer use is still experimental — reliability on complex GUI workflows varies
  • Rate limits on lower API tiers can throttle production workloads without a usage tier upgrade
  • Vendor lock-in: prompt formats, tool calling schemas, and extended thinking APIs are Anthropic-specific
