Scores

Popularity4/5

Over 170K GitHub stars, the longest-running CSS framework, and a default in countless PHP, Rails, Django, and WordPress projects. Tailwind CSS now leads in new projects, but Bootstrap remains widely known beyond front-end specialists.

Learning Curve2/5

Class names map directly to visible components, and the documentation shows copy-paste markup for each one. A working layout needs only the grid and a few components, with Sass theming as an optional later step.

Flexibility3/5

Theming through Sass variables and the utility API covers most needs, but the component-first design pushes projects toward Bootstrap's look. Heavy visual departures mean overriding component styles.

Performance3/5

The full stylesheet and JavaScript bundle are larger than a purged utility CSS build, though modular Sass imports and the lack of dependencies keep it reasonable. Runtime cost is low because it is plain CSS.

Portability5/5

MIT-licensed, framework-agnostic, and delivered by CDN, npm, or a package manager. It runs on any backend and any frontend, with no vendor tie.

About Bootstrap

Bootstrap is an open-source CSS framework that ships ready-made components such as navbars, cards, modals, forms, and buttons, styled consistently out of the box. It began at Twitter in 2011 and is still the most widely deployed CSS framework on the web, especially on server-rendered sites, admin panels, and long-lived business applications.

The core of the framework is a mobile-first 12-column grid with responsive breakpoints, plus a set of utility classes for spacing, display, flexbox, and color. Bootstrap 5 dropped the jQuery dependency, so the optional JavaScript behind dropdowns, modals, tooltips, and carousels is plain vanilla JS that you can load as a bundle or import module by module.

Theming runs through Sass variables and CSS custom properties. You can recompile the Sass source to change the palette, spacing, and component defaults, or override variables at runtime. Version 5.3 added built-in color modes, so light and dark themes switch with a single data-bs-theme attribute.

Bootstrap is framework-agnostic: it is added with a CDN link, an npm package, or a Composer or Rails gem, and it fits Laravel, Symfony, Django, WordPress themes, and plain HTML equally well. Wrapper libraries such as React-Bootstrap and ng-bootstrap rebuild the components for specific JavaScript frameworks.

Key Features

  • Mobile-first 12-column responsive grid with six breakpoints
  • Pre-styled components: navbar, card, modal, offcanvas, accordion, toast, and forms
  • Utility API for spacing, flexbox, display, borders, and color
  • Sass source with variables and maps for deep theming
  • Built-in light and dark color modes via the data-bs-theme attribute
  • Vanilla JavaScript plugins with no jQuery dependency
  • Bootstrap Icons, a separate open-source SVG icon set
  • Delivery by CDN, npm, Composer, or Rails gem with no build step required

Pros

  • Ready-made components give a consistent, usable interface with very little custom CSS
  • Huge pool of documentation, themes, admin templates, and tutorials
  • Works with any backend or frontend, including server-rendered PHP, Python, and Ruby apps
  • Can be dropped in through a CDN link with no build tooling
  • Familiar to most front-end developers, which eases hiring and handover

Cons

  • Sites built with default styles look alike unless the Sass theme is customised
  • Heavier CSS than a utility framework unless unused Sass modules are removed
  • Customising beyond the defaults means overriding component styles or recompiling Sass
  • Release cadence is slow, and Bootstrap 6 development has not started
