Scores
Popularity2/5
One of the two dominant PHP frameworks, with 31K stars on the main repo and components embedded in Laravel, Drupal, and Magento. Awareness outside PHP circles is limited, in line with other leading frameworks of mid-sized language ecosystems.
Learning Curve4/5
Dependency injection, bundles, Flex recipes, and Doctrine all need to be understood before building anything non-trivial. Documentation is thorough, but the entry point is steeper than in Laravel.
Flexibility5/5
Every part of the stack can be swapped or used on its own, from the ORM to the templating layer. Architectural choices are left to the developer rather than prescribed.
Performance4/5
Compiled service containers and cached configuration give fast production runtime, and PHP-FPM or worker-mode runtimes such as FrankenPHP scale well. Development mode is slower because of the debug tooling.
Portability5/5
MIT-licensed and runs on any PHP host, container, or platform. Doctrine and Twig are replaceable, and nothing ties a project to a vendor.
About Symfony
Symfony is a mature, open-source PHP framework built from a library of decoupled components, first released in 2005. It is used for full web applications, REST and GraphQL APIs, and console tools, and its explicit, configuration-driven style makes it popular for large, long-lived enterprise codebases.
The Symfony components (HttpFoundation, Routing, Console, Messenger, Security, and more) are published as standalone packages. Laravel, Drupal, Magento, and Composer itself depend on them, so many PHP developers use Symfony code without ever creating a Symfony project.
A full-stack project typically uses Doctrine ORM for the database layer, Twig for templates, and the Symfony Flex recipe system to install and configure packages. On the front end, Symfony UX adds Stimulus and Turbo integrations for server-rendered pages with interactive pieces, while AssetMapper or Webpack Encore bundles assets for Vue, React, or Tailwind. API Platform, built on Symfony, generates REST and GraphQL APIs for projects with a separate JavaScript front end.
Symfony follows a predictable release schedule with a long-term support version every two years. The framework is MIT-licensed and free to use, and it runs on any PHP host, in a container, or on platforms with PHP support such as Upsun.
Key Features
- Decoupled components usable on their own or as a full framework
- Doctrine ORM integration with migrations and a query builder
- Twig templating with automatic output escaping
- Symfony Flex recipes that install and configure packages automatically
- Messenger component for queues, async handlers, and transports
- Security component with authenticators, voters, and role-based access control
- Symfony UX with Stimulus and Turbo for interactive server-rendered pages
- Long-term support releases every two years, with security fixes for three years
Pros
- Decoupled components can be adopted one at a time, even inside other frameworks
- Explicit configuration and strong typing suit large teams and long-lived applications
- Predictable release and deprecation policy with long-term support versions
- Large ecosystem including API Platform, Sylius, and Drupal
- Mature tooling with a debug toolbar, profiler, and extensive documentation
Cons
- Steeper learning curve than Laravel, with more configuration and concepts up front
- More boilerplate for small projects and quick prototypes
- Smaller beginner community and tutorial base than Laravel
- No first-party hosting or deployment product comparable to Laravel's Forge and Cloud

Symfony Starter
ProjectPHP web application built with Symfony, the component-based framework behind much of the PHP ecosystem, with Twig templates, Doctrine for the database layer, and PostgreSQL by default with MySQL or MariaDB as options.
Tools Related to Symfony
Integrates with Symfony(3)
The official Symfony UX React package renders React components from Twig templates with server-supplied props, so React can power parts of a server-rendered Symfony page.
The official Symfony UX Vue package renders Vue components from Twig templates and passes them props, so Vue can power parts of a server-rendered Symfony page.
Symfony includes a Bootstrap 5 form theme for Twig that is enabled with a single twig.form_themes setting, so generated forms use Bootstrap markup without custom templates.
Built on (1)
Symfony is a PHP framework and a library of reusable PHP components for building web applications and APIs.
Alternatives to Symfony(1)
Symfony is the more modular, configuration-driven PHP framework favoured for large enterprise codebases; Laravel is the more opinionated, batteries-included one with a faster start and a bigger beginner community. Laravel itself builds on Symfony components.
