About Looker
Looker is Google Cloud's enterprise business intelligence platform, acquired by Google in 2019. Its defining idea is a semantic layer: data teams describe tables, joins, and metrics in LookML, a version-controlled modeling language, and every dashboard, scheduled report, and API call is generated from those definitions. A metric such as revenue or active users is defined once and means the same thing in every report, which is the main reason teams choose Looker over drag-and-drop tools.
Looker queries the warehouse live rather than copying data into its own store. It runs on BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift, Databricks, PostgreSQL, and other SQL databases, and its BI connectors expose LookML models to Google Sheets, Tableau, and Power BI. Conversational Analytics, powered by Gemini, answers natural-language questions against the same governed models.
The current product, Looker (Google Cloud core), comes in three editions: Standard for teams under 50 users, Enterprise for internal BI with stronger security controls, and Embed for customer-facing analytics in other applications. Every edition is sold as an annual commitment through Google sales, includes a set number of standard and developer users, and adds Developer, Standard, and Viewer licences on top. There is no free or self-serve edition.
Google's free dashboarding tool, Data Studio (called Looker Studio from 2022 to 2026), is a separate product with its own Pro plan, suited to quick reports on Google Analytics, Sheets, and BigQuery without a modeling layer.
