About Power BI

Power BI is Microsoft's business intelligence and analytics platform and a core workload of the Microsoft Fabric analytics suite. Business users, analysts, and data teams use it to turn raw data into interactive reports and dashboards without deep programming knowledge.

It has three main parts: Power BI Desktop, a free Windows application for building reports; the Power BI Service, the cloud platform where reports are published, shared, and refreshed; and mobile apps for iOS and Android. Reports are designed on a drag-and-drop canvas with built-in and custom visuals, Power Query handles data ingestion and shaping, and DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) powers calculated measures and analytical logic.

Power BI connects to files (Excel, CSV, Parquet), relational databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Snowflake), and cloud services (Azure, Salesforce, Google Analytics, SharePoint, Dynamics 365), plus generic ODBC, OData, and REST connectors. Import mode caches data for speed, DirectQuery queries sources live, and Direct Lake reads Delta tables in OneLake inside Fabric.

Access is licensed per user or by capacity. Building reports is free, sharing them requires Pro or Premium Per User, and Fabric capacity lets unlicensed users view content at larger sizes. Power BI Embedded puts reports inside other applications, and Power BI Report Server covers on-premises deployments. Copilot generates report pages, summaries, and DAX from natural-language prompts.
