About
Power BI is Microsoft's flagship business intelligence and analytics platform, first released in 2014 and now a core component of the Microsoft Fabric unified analytics suite. It enables business users, analysts, and data professionals to transform raw data into interactive visualisations, dashboards, and reports without requiring deep programming knowledge.
At its core, Power BI consists of three main components: Power BI Desktop (a free Windows application for building reports), the Power BI Service (a cloud-hosted SaaS platform for sharing and collaborating on reports), and Power BI Mobile (apps for iOS and Android). Reports are built using a drag-and-drop canvas with a library of built-in and custom visuals, while Power Query handles data ingestion and transformation and DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) powers calculated columns, measures, and complex analytical logic.
Power BI connects to over 150 built-in data sources — from files (Excel, CSV, JSON, Parquet) and relational databases (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Snowflake) to cloud services (Azure, Salesforce, Google Analytics, SharePoint Online, Dynamics 365) and generic connectors (ODBC, OData, REST APIs). DirectQuery mode allows live querying of source systems without importing data.
For enterprise deployments, Power BI Embedded (Azure) enables ISVs and developers to integrate interactive reports directly into their own web or mobile applications. Power BI Report Server provides an on-premises hosting option for organisations subject to data residency or compliance requirements. As of 2025–2026, Power BI is deeply integrated with Microsoft Copilot, allowing users to describe reports in natural language and have AI generate visualisations and summaries automatically.
Key Features
- Drag-and-drop report and dashboard builder with 100+ built-in visuals
- Power Query for no-code / low-code data transformation and shaping
- DAX formula language for advanced calculated measures and KPIs
- 150+ native data connectors (files, databases, cloud services, APIs)
- DirectQuery and Import modes for live or cached data access
- AI-powered Copilot for natural-language report generation
- Power BI Embedded for integrating analytics into third-party applications
- Power BI Report Server for on-premises self-hosted deployments
- Deep integration with Microsoft 365, Azure, and Microsoft Fabric
Pros
- Tight integration with the Microsoft ecosystem (Excel, Teams, Azure, Dynamics 365)
- Generous free Power BI Desktop application for building reports locally
- Large library of connectors covering both cloud services and on-premises databases
- Strong AI and Copilot features for natural-language querying and report generation
- Active community, extensive documentation, and large talent pool
- Power BI Report Server enables true on-premises hosting for regulated industries
Cons
- Steep learning curve for DAX — advanced calculations require significant training
- Performance degrades noticeably with very large datasets or highly complex reports
- Limited visual customization compared to code-first tools; built-in visuals can feel constrained
- Pro and Premium Per User pricing increased 40% in April 2025, raising cost for larger teams
- Power BI Service is cloud-only (Microsoft Azure) — on-premises option (Report Server) lags behind in features
- Heavy dependency on the Microsoft ecosystem; less suitable for organizations standardized on Google or AWS

Possible Stacks
Microsoft Fabric + Power BI
ProjectMicrosoft Fabric covers the full analytics stack — data ingestion, lakehouse storage, and SQL/Python-based transformation — while Power BI surfaces insights through interactive reports and dashboards. One unified Microsoft platform from raw data to business decision.
Power BI + dbt + PostgreSQL
ProjectStore data in PostgreSQL, use dbt to build clean and tested transformation models on top of it, then connect Power BI directly to the transformed layer for self-service reporting.
