About Google Sheets
Google Sheets is Google's cloud spreadsheet, free with any Google account and included in every Google Workspace plan for organisations. Files live in Google Drive, save automatically, keep a full version history, and open in any browser or the mobile apps. Its defining strength is real-time collaboration: many people can edit the same sheet at once, with live cursors, comments, and no merge conflicts.
The function library covers the usual spreadsheet ground plus Google-specific functions such as QUERY (SQL-like queries over a range), IMPORTRANGE (pull data from another sheet), and GOOGLEFINANCE. Tables give ranges typed columns and structure, and pivot tables, charts, and the Explore panel handle quick analysis. Gemini is built in: it writes formulas from a plain-language request, generates charts and summaries, and the AI function applies a prompt to every row of a column.
Sheets is also a common glue layer. Connected Sheets queries BigQuery tables (and Looker models) live without copying the data, Google Forms responses land in a sheet automatically, and Data Studio and AppSheet use sheets as a data source. Apps Script, a JavaScript runtime, adds custom functions, macros, triggers, and add-ons, and automation tools such as Zapier, Make, and n8n read and write rows through official integrations.
The limits show at scale: a spreadsheet caps at 10 million cells and slows well before that, and Excel still leads on Power Query and Power Pivot modelling and VBA. Personal use is free; Workspace plans are priced per user per month, with discounts for annual billing.
