About Metabase
Metabase is an open-source business intelligence tool built so that people without SQL skills can explore data, build dashboards, and share reports. Its query builder lets users filter, group, summarise, and join tables through menus, and results can be saved as questions, combined into dashboards with filters and drill-through, and sent on a schedule by email or Slack. Analysts get a native SQL editor, and Models define reusable, cleaned-up datasets and business logic that others build on.
Metabase connects to more than 20 data sources, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, BigQuery, Snowflake, and Redshift, and queries them live rather than copying data into its own store. Built-in AI can answer questions in plain language and generate SQL.
It is widely used for embedded analytics: SaaS products put Metabase dashboards inside their own app, with row-level and column-level permissions so each customer sees only their data, and white-labelling to match the product.
The open-source edition is free under the AGPL licence and self-hosted as a single Java application or Docker container, with unlimited users and dashboards. Metabase Cloud plans (Starter and Pro, priced per month with a set number of users included) add hosting and support, and Pro adds SSO, advanced permissions, caching controls, auditing, and multi-tenant embedding. Enterprise adds air-gapped deployment and dedicated support. Very large datasets or heavy concurrent use can slow it down, since queries run against the source database.
