About Sanity
Sanity is a headless CMS built around Sanity Studio, an open-source (MIT) React application that serves as the editing interface. Instead of a fixed admin UI, the Studio is configured in code with JavaScript or TypeScript: developers define the content schema, add custom input components and conditional fields, and shape the editorial workflow, then deploy the Studio to Sanity's hosting or any static host.
Content lives in the Content Lake, Sanity's hosted real-time document store. It is always cloud-hosted: the Studio can be self-hosted, but the backend cannot. Content is queried with GROQ (Graph-Relational Object Queries), Sanity's own query language, which can filter, join, and reshape documents in a single request; a GraphQL API is also available. Rich text is stored as Portable Text, structured JSON that renders to any frontend, and images are served through a CDN with on-the-fly transformations.
Multiple editors can work on the same document at once and see each other's changes live. Visual editing and live preview show draft content inside the real site, and AI features (AI Assist and Content Agent) help generate and edit content. Sanity is common in developer-led projects with Next.js, Astro, and other frameworks that need a content model shaped around the product.
Pricing is per seat. The Free plan includes 20 seats with Administrator and Viewer roles, the Growth plan charges per seat for up to 50 seats and adds editorial roles, comments, tasks, and scheduled drafts, and Enterprise adds SSO, Content Releases, and custom quotas through sales.
