About WordPress
WordPress is a free, open-source content management system written in PHP and backed by MySQL or MariaDB, first released in 2003. It runs about 40% of all websites and well over half of the sites that use a known CMS, from personal blogs to major news sites, which makes it the most widely deployed web software.
The platform is built around the block editor (Gutenberg), a theme system for visual design, and a plugin API with hooks (actions and filters) for extending behavior. The official directory lists more than 50,000 free plugins covering SEO, e-commerce (WooCommerce), page builders, forms, security, and caching, and thousands of free and premium themes change a site's look without code. Block themes and full-site editing let the same editor control headers, footers, and templates.
WordPress.org is the self-hosted open-source software, installed on shared hosting, a VPS, or a managed WordPress host. WordPress.com is the hosted service run by Automattic on the same software, with less maintenance and fewer options on its lower plans. The REST API also lets WordPress act as a headless CMS behind a separate frontend.
The software itself costs nothing. Running it means paying for hosting and a domain, plus any premium themes, plugins, or managed hosting plans chosen on top, and keeping core, themes, and plugins updated.

Tools Related to WordPress
Works well with WordPress(1)
WordPress is the primary workload for Hostinger's shared hosting and managed WordPress plans — Hostinger's hPanel, LiteSpeed server stack, and NVMe storage are all tuned around WordPress hosting.
Integrates with WordPress(6)
WordPress has officially supported MariaDB since version 4.4; many managed WordPress hosts (Kinsta, Pressable) run MariaDB as the underlying database with zero configuration differences from the WordPress side.
WordPress is built on MySQL: core tables, plugins, and themes all read and write through the wpdb class, and MySQL (or its fork MariaDB) is the database every WordPress install needs.
WordPress connects to Zapier through Zapier's official WordPress app, plus WooCommerce- and form-plugin-specific Zapier integrations for e-commerce and form events.
WordPress's REST API and webhook-capable plugins let n8n workflows react to site activity and read or write content programmatically.
WordPress connects to Make through Make's native WordPress modules, covering post, form, and WooCommerce order events.
Cloudflare is commonly placed in front of WordPress sites — it provides CDN caching, DDoS protection, and the Cloudflare plugin improves WordPress performance significantly.
Required by WordPress(1)
WordPress is written in PHP and needs a PHP runtime on the server to render pages and run plugins and themes.
Tools that require WordPress(1)
WooCommerce is a PHP plugin that requires WordPress to function.
Alternatives to WordPress(10)
WordPress requires hosting, themes, and plugins; Webflow is a visual all-in-one platform — WordPress is more flexible, Webflow is faster for design-led sites.
Shopify is SaaS e-commerce; WordPress with WooCommerce is self-hosted — Shopify is simpler, WooCommerce is more customizable and cheaper at scale.
Both website platforms; WordPress is more flexible with a huge plugin ecosystem, Wix is simpler and more beginner-friendly.
WordPress and Framer are both used to build websites but with different priorities — WordPress suits content-heavy sites with editorial workflows and plugin extensibility; Framer is chosen by designers wanting React-based performance, motion design, and minimal configuration overhead.
Ghost is modern, API-first, and focused on content/publishing with markdown; WordPress is the dominant legacy CMS with a vast plugin ecosystem and steeper maintenance.
Contentful is a modern headless CMS; WordPress is a traditional full-stack CMS — Contentful is API-first, WordPress includes frontend and has a vast plugin ecosystem.
