About Shopify
Shopify is a hosted e-commerce platform used by millions of merchants to build and run online stores without managing servers or code. It bundles a theme-based storefront builder, a hosted checkout, Shopify Payments, inventory and order management, shipping labels, and reporting in one subscription, with unlimited products on every store plan.
Selling is multi-channel. The same catalogue feeds the online store, social channels (Instagram, TikTok), marketplaces, AI chat assistants, and in-person sales through Shopify POS hardware and apps. The Shopify App Store adds thousands of apps for reviews, subscriptions, marketing, and fulfilment, and Sidekick, the built-in AI assistant, helps with store setup, content, and analytics.
Developers are not locked out. Themes are written in the Liquid templating language, the Admin and Storefront APIs cover the whole store, and Hydrogen supports headless storefronts built with React. Shopify Plus, the enterprise tier, adds B2B selling, checkout customisation, Shopify Flow automation at scale, and unlimited staff accounts, and serves brands such as Gymshark and Allbirds.
Pricing is a monthly plan (Basic, Grow, Advanced, or Plus, with a lighter Starter plan for selling through social links and buy buttons), discounted for yearly billing. Card rates drop on higher plans, and a transaction fee applies when a store uses a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments. Paid apps and themes usually add to the total.
